A BRIEF HISTORY OF BICYCLING

The dandy horse, also called Draisienne or laufmaschine, was the first human means of transport to use only two wheels in tandem and was invented by the German Baron Karl von Drais. It is regarded as the modern bicycle's forerunner; Drais introduced it to the public in Mannheim in summer 1817 and in Paris in 1818. Its rider sat astride a wooden frame supported by two in-line wheels and pushed the vehicle along with his/her feet while steering the front wheel. The 1860s captured the realease of Velocipede or Boneshaker - a two-wheeled bicycle with pedals and cranks on the front wheel. It was known as the bone shaker because the combination of a wood frame and metal tires made for a very uncomfortable ride over cobblestone streets. See what happened next on the list:

  • 1870s - High-wheeled bicycle: One of the first models to be called a 'bicycle' (after its two wheels). The high wheel allowed the rider to travel farther with a single rotation of the pedals. Moreover, a metal frame and rubber tires provided a more comfortable ride than the boneshaker.
  • 1885 - Rover Safety bicycle: Invented by John Kemp Starely, England; Featured a strong enough metal to make a chain, plus it had two same-sized wheels and a similar frame to today's bicycles.
  • 1888 - Pnuematic tires: Invented by John Boyd Dunlop, Ireland; Develops air-filled tires that provide a smoother ride than the previously used hard-rubber tires.
  • 1920s - Kid's bicycles become popular.
  • 1940s - Built-in kickstands developed.
  • 1960s - Racing bicycles become popular and feature dropped handlebars, narrow tires, numerous speeds and a lighter frame.
  • 1980 - Spurred by mountain biking and extreme sports, mountain bicycles become a popular consumer item and feature sturdier frames, larger wheels and flat handlebars.
  • 1996 - Mountain bicycles appear in the Olympics.

It's a long way from there to now. Seeing how bicycle develops through time, we know to appreciate what we are having to day and how society grows. Let spend some time to be thankful.

    About Leura

    Good Day Guys,
Only if you really think about Blue Mountains tour?! We have
more detailed information about Blue Mountains Tours

It’s hard to explain what it is about this World Heritage Blue Mountains region that sticks
with you. Maybe it’s the eucalyptus trees throwing a blue haze across the ridges, or the
sandstone walls burning orange at dusk while the cockatoos chatter
their evening news. Whatever the reason, every time I leave Sydney behind and drive west towards
that misty horizon, I’m reminded why this World Heritage Listed National Park is one of Australia’s most beautiful landscapes.

I’ve been showing visitors the magic of this region — from famous lookouts like Echo Point to Jenolan Caves and the Megalong Valley — for years, and trust me, the this
is not something you tick off in a day. They’re a natural reset button for anyone coming from Sydney, a breathtaking blend
of cliffs, waterfalls and fresh eucalyptus breeze.

Just 90 minutes from Circular Quay via the Great Western Highway,
the region is part of the UNESCO-listed Greater Blue Mountains.
It’s a protected area of over a million hectares, stretching all the way to Wollemi National Park.

It’s an intricate network of valleys, rainforests and towering
eucalypts, sheltering a huge diversity of Australian wildlife, featuring lyrebirds, wallabies, and even the rare dingo.

    About wine tasting tours

    Hi Guys,
Only if you really think about accommodations?! We have more detailed information about Leura Cascades

It’s hard to claim you’ve explored Sydney until you stand at Echo Point
as the mist roll across the Jamison Valley — that
feeling stays with you. At Face Figurati Travel, we believe day trips to the Blue Mountains from Sydney aren’t
just another day trip; they’re something special.

When I first kicked off guiding Blue Mountains tours from Sydney as a young guide, I imagined just scenic lookouts and
wildlife. What I discovered was something far more powerful — that fresh eucalyptus
aroma that hits you instantly, towering escarpments stretching to the horizon,
and the quiet hum of nature all around. That balance between calm and wild that makes this World Heritage-listed park one of Australia’s most loved destinations.

Covering over one million hectares, the Blue Mountains National Park is included in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area,
officially recognised worldwide for its incredible biodiversity and its Indigenous cultural importance.
The famous blue haze? It’s due to the natural oils of
countless gum trees — when light passes
over the valley, it transforms the horizon that dreamy mountain haze you’ll notice at places
such as Echo Point, Govetts Leap or Cahill’s Lookout.

Whether you’re chasing panoramic views, waterfalls, or an authentic Australian nature escape, Blue Mountains tours
from Sydney offer it all — nature, culture, and a sense of wonder that’s hard to forget.
